The Fleet Services Unit is a branch of the Communications Division. We are located at 40 Columbus Place in the 3rd floor garage and our office is on the 4th floor above the garage. The unit consists of a Lieutenant, 3 Police Officers, and a civilian electronics technician. We also have a “Fleet Liaison” designated in each precinct, command or division to assist in coordinating the maintenance of their unit’s vehicles. The liaisons also perform daily or weekly “checks” of each vehicle’s vital fluids and supplies.
Our responsibilities vary greatly, but are mainly focused on improving and maintaining our automotive and bicycle fleet of approximately 300 total vehicles. This includes the purchasing of new vehicles and the auctioning of decommissioned vehicles. The type and size of vehicles operated by the Yonkers Police Department varies greatly. The largest is our 1998 International Mobile Command Center and the smallest are our Trek bicycles. In between we have Ford F550 4WD ESU trucks, Armored Personnel Carriers, Chevrolet Tahoe and Blazer 4WD SUV’s, Chevrolet Express Prisoner Transport Vans, Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor and Chevrolet Impala four door sedans, Harley Davidson Police Motorcycles, Whitebear GO-4 three wheeled scooters and others.
The Fleet Services Unit installs emergency lighting, radios, and sirens in almost every vehicle used by the Yonkers Police. Many of our vehicles also require custom installations of different types of law enforcement equipment. All of this equipment requires periodic maintenance and repairs throughout the life of the vehicle. Which is handled almost exclusively in-house at our Columbus Place garage. Additionally, when vehicles are permanently removed from service for various reasons, Fleet Services must uninstall all of this equipment before we can auction off the decommissioned vehicles.
The Fleet Services Unit operates and maintains the department’s Mobile
Command Center. Which is used as a portable command and control center during
unusual events such as the 9/11 tragedy, during which we were mobilized to
stand-by status, in case we were needed anywhere in the lower Hudson Valley.
This Mobile Command Center has various capabilities, which make it an important
asset to the Department and City. We also utilize the Mobile Command Center
for public relation purposes such as parades and community events.

We are also responsible for the maintenance and procurement of the Department’s communications equipment. Which consists of approximately 300 portable radios, 300 mobile (vehicle) radios, as well as the various transmitter and receiver sites throughout the city.
The Fleet Unit has recently completed the retrofitting of the gas tanks on all of our Ford Crown Victorias. This procedure meets all safety requirements.
