The Field Services Bureau encompasses the four Yonkers Police precincts and their uniformed patrol officers as well as the Detective Division, and Intelligence Unit. Patrolling is accomplished in the following ways, foot patrol, scooter, bicycle, motorcycle and emergency trucks. In 1999 the Field Services Bureau personnel were responsible for handling over 160,000 calls for service by the Yonkers citizenry. There are a total of 7 captains, 19 lieutenants, 38 sergeants, 338 police officers and 2 civilian employees assigned to the Field Services Bureau which makes up two thirds of the department manpower. Of all the bureaus and divisions of the Department, the members of Field Services have always had the most direct contact with the public.

Community Policing

Police historians have defined three distinct eras in policing. They are the political era, the reform era, and the community-policing era. The Field Services Bureau has moved into the community-policing era with several bold initiatives that have brought police officers closer to the community they serve. One of the most recent initiatives is the Bicycle Unit that has essentially given a patrol officer better mobility to cover a greater area while having the same objective as foot patrol officer has. Due to the success of the Bicycle Unit program additional officers have been added.
