Commanding Officer
Lieutenant Mirabella
The Property and Evidence Unit
is responsible for maintaining, storing, and disposing of all property which
is taken into police custody. Property taken as evidence must be carefully
safeguarded to prevent contamination and insure its value at court. Found
property is held in trust fro its rightful owner, and property held for safekeeping
has been entrusted to the Police Department, where its integrity cannot be
compromised. An equally important function of this unit is the proper and
timely disposal of property. This includes the return of property to its
rightful owner or the destruction of items as prescribed by law.
The unit continues to increase productivity. 1998
has shown increases in several areas of activities. The unit took in 3,916 forms
listing 34,230 pieces of property. This represents an increase of 5% in forms
received and 46% in pieces received, compared with 1997. The unit was able to
dispose of 42,265 pieces of property listed on 5,055 forms. This represents a
dramatic increase of 60% more forms of and 62% more pieces or property disposed
of, compared to 1997.
Narcotics & Firearms
In 1998, the unit took in 1,383 forms listing narcotic evidence, a 16% increase over 1997. The annual narcotics destruction took place in December, after the District Attorney's Office cleared these cases for destruction. Over 21,636 pieces of narcotic evidence were destroyed. There was a total of 261 guns received and 105 guns returned, in 1998. Although no firearm destruction was held in 1998, the unit successfully identified and separated many for destruction.
Money & Biohazard
In 1998, the unit received $280,982.05 in cash, returned $56,399.17, and deposited $29,635.88 into Police Seizure Fund account. Biohazard evidence must be identified, separated and red bagged. At the end of the year, the unit worked with Yonkers General Hospital to dispose of 6 large red biohazard samples, bloody clothing, blood stained articles, weapons and hypodermic syringes.Auctions & Donations
Throughout the year, many items which went unclaimed were set aside fro auction. Included were portable radios, beepers, cellular phones, tools, gun cases, car seats, jewelry, and various other items. As in years past, many bicycles were turned over to the Community Affairs Unit where they were refurbished and distributed to youths in the city. Many of the bicycles were found property whose owners could not be identified.
In December, unclaimed new clothing taken as evidence was donated to the Yonkers YWCA for distribution to the community. This clothing consisted of coats, pants, shirts, dresses, and sweaters for women, men, children, and infants.
