Any organization interested in any of the following programs should forward a written letter to the Police Commissioner's office at 104 South Broadway, with specific interest, date, time, and location. Once approved by the commissioner the C.A.D. office will contact you. To accomplish this mission, The Community Affairs Division is involved in:
Car Seat Installation C.A.D. staff will install your car seat or check your currently installed seat at no cost. To make an appointment call: 377-7375.
D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Six (6) New York State certified police officers, D.A.R.E. Instructors, provide a seventeen (17) week instructional program which serves fifth grade students in both public and parochial schools. These children are taught strategies to resist the pressures to use drugs and participate in violence. This is a crucial time to provide this program since once the children graduate from the elementary schools and move on to the middle schools settings they will be exposed to new experiences and stronger types of peer pressures. The D.A.R.E. Program prepares the students for situations that deal with the use of drugs and violence and provides the tools for the children to resist these pressures.
Venturers Law Explorers This program is intended for youths between fourteen and twenty one years of age who have an interest in a law enforcement related career. Specially trained C.A.D. staff who are certified by the Boys Scouts
of America provide participating youths with activities which allow them to become more familiar with various departments and units within the Yonkers Police Department and the Yonkers Court System.
C.H.I. / Y.P.D. - In conjunction with the Community Housing Innovation, C.A.D. provides an after school tutorial program to Yonkers school children who are in transitional homes. Police officers volunteer their time to this program in which children receive one-on-one homework assistance followed by quality interactive time with the officers and C.H.I. staff.
Curb Side Seminars These are informal, impromptu sessions in which C.A.D. officers speak to children about conflict resolution and mediation. During the summer months when children are not in a structured school setting police officers participate in street fairs, health fairs, and block parties. Here they emphasize the D.A.R.E. principals to those children that have taken part of the D.A.R.E. Program as well as prepare the younger children that are looking forward to take part in the D.A.R.E. Program in the future.
Bicycle Safety Lectures. During the summer months and upon request, C.A.D. staff will attend youth, community meetings and neighborhood fairs to present information for children to reinforce bicycle safety issues and general rules of the road.
Bicycle Lottery Donated, lost and stolen/recovered and unclaimed bicycles are repaired by volunteer bicycle mechanics and made street safe. Through a lottery system, they are raffled off to needy children in various sections of the city. The Community Affairs Division is always looking for good unwanted bicycles as well as bicycle helmets to raffle off. Citizens donations are greatly appreciated by C.A.D. as well as the children.
Etching I.D.Program The Community Affairs Division provides this program to Yonkers citizens who wish to etch a number identifiable only to the owner, on their property. This number is then logged into the C.A.D. computer with the owner's information. In the event that the property is stolen and recovered the Yonkers Police Department can track down its proper owner and return said property to same.
Elder Abuse Connection The Community Affairs Division is part of a consortium of agencies throughout the county focusing on delivering services to elders who are abused. This division has officers dedicated to deal with the elder population and their particular issues.
Personal Safety Lectures Through these lectures groups and organizations are informed as to methods to maximize their safety at home and in the public. This Program can be provided to any organization by contacting the Police Commissioner's officer in writing. After approval by the commissioner, an officer from C.A.D. will contact the party requesting the service to confirm.
Home Security Survey Police officers perform on-site inspections of commercial and/or residential premises to insure utmost protection and safety to the occupants/owners. Advice is given to homeowners and apartment dwellers that will assure better protection for their property.
Block Watch Program C.A.D. Present, supervise and maintain records of program which involves neighbors looking out for neighbors. Citizens become an extension of the police to alert the police department when and if an unusual or criminal situation is occurring in their own neighborhood.
Civilian Ride-Along Program Civilians ride along with the police officer on regular patrol. A background check is done on the applicant and special applications must be completed and approved by the police commissioner.
Fingerprinting The Community Affairs staff will provide parents, at their request, with a
record of their children's fingerprints for informal/safety purposes. These records remain with the parents the police department does not keep a copy, these are solely for individual records.
Halloween Curfew C.A.D., at 36 Radford Street is the central location in which all youths that are breaking the Halloween Curfew are brought to. C.A.D. staff also disseminates information with times and ages of curfew into the schools and the community in general and contacts the youths parents or guardian to arrange pick-up.
