The Yonkers Police Departments staffs a full time Emergency Service Unit, (ESU) that is trained and equipped to respond to medical, rescue, and tactical emergencies. ESU crews are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All ESU members are trained and certified as Emergency Medical Technicians. Prospective ESU candidates are required to complete the Basic ESU five week training course, followed by continuous advanced rescue, tactical and firearms training, during their tenure with ESU.

MEDICAL
ESU members are trained to respond and provide Basic Life Support Services
to the public, and provide paramedics with assistance and back up.
RESCUE
ESU teams patrol in Ford heavy-duty rescue trucks equipped to handle the following
types of emergencies:
Persons trapped in vehicle wrecks
High and low angle rope rescue
Water rescue
Ice rescue
Sick/rabid animal control
Elevator emergencies
TACTICAL OPERATIONS
ESU operates as the Departments Special Weapons Team, and is responsible
for handling:
Hostage Situations
Barricaded subject Incidents
High Risk warrant service
Emotionally disturbed persons

TACTICAL EQUIPMENT
Each ESU officer is issued a ballistic helmet, heavy body armor, chemical agent
mask, and nomex flame retardant gloves and hood. Officers assigned to the
scoped rifle marksman team are issued .308 cal Remington model 700 Police
sniper rifles.
All ESU members are trained and qualified with the following:
H&K MP5 submachine gun
Colt M16 commando rifle
Benelli super 90 12 gauge shotgun
37mm chemical agent
12 gauge breaching shotgun
