Detention Services Division

   Detention Services Division, which is located at the City Jail at 26 Alexander Street, consists of Central Booking (Booking Officers and Detention Officers) and the Warrant Squad. The initial processing of most arrests in the city occurs at Central Booking. During the booking procedure, prisoners have charges specified against them, and are photographed, fingerprinted, and lodged at the jail prior to their initial appearance in court.
   One captain, five lieutenants, six police officers, sixteen male detention officers and seven female detention officers staff the Detention Services Division. This relatively small staff safely handles thousands of prisoners every year.

Central Booking

   The Booking Officer (a police lieutenant) is responsible for administration of the facility, the proper handling of all arrested persons, and the supervision of staff. In 2004, the lieutenant "booked" 4,919 prisoners. In addition, there were 3,829 prisoners fingerprinted and photographed. The lieutenants oversee the safety and security of the jail, ensure prisoners are treated according to the law and police department policy, and maintain pertaining to booking procedures.

   The Detention Officers handle more than 13,424 prisoners in 2004. This includes all phases of court and department requirements: lodging, transportation, security, and other general services. The officers provided more than 15,600 meals to prisoners and made approximately 10,725 prisoner transport trips between the County Jail and Yonkers City courts. These officers have many other responsibilities such as assisting the lieutenant during the booking process, fingerprinting prisoners, maintaining records, and ensuring the safety and security of prisoners.

Warrant Squad

   Locating and arresting suspects with active arrest warrants, conducting surveillances, participating in interagency warrant "sweeps" or raids, following the mandates of the courts, and maintain extensive records are all part of the Warrant Squad duties. The Warrant Squads computer lists 10,000 active warrants. Every year there are about 3,000 additions to the database and 3,000 warrants are executed.
